2011 Korea Drama Awards

3 Oct

The 2011 Korea Drama Awards were given out this weekend to some of the brightest stars of the Korean entertainment industry. I love award shows and I’m no stranger to obsessing over lists and nominees for a variety of awards handed out in Hollywood (Every year I watch the Oscars* and the Emmys along with the smaller-scale award ceremonies). The Korean industry too likes to reward its stars for giving out awards for its very successful shows.

Here is the list of winners from that event and some comments:

Daesang: Secret Garden (SBS)

*I honestly wouldn’t have thought that Secret Garden would win. It’s not that I think that it’s a bad show. It had so many delightful moments but I don’t think it was consistently good. It was a solid piece of work though and obviously it was incredibly popular.

Best Writer: Kim Eun Sook (Secret Garden)

*Again, I think they’re rewarding the show for it’s twisty tale rather than the actual writing. Otherwise, the Hong sisters are very much more deserving of winning this award.

Best Director: Kim Won Suk (Sungkyunkwan Scandal)

Best Actor: Lee Min Ho (City Hunter)

*I bet this is more of an award for the popularity of his show and the actor himself rather than the acting. Again, I think he’s a great actor and he did a great job for this show but to label him as “Best” is rather too obvious.

Best Actress: Yeom Jung Ah (Royal Family)

Best Supporting Actor: Joo Sang Wook (Giant, Thorn Bird)

Best Supporting Actress: Lee Yuri (Twinkle Twinkle)

Best Male Newcomer: Kim Soo Hyun (Dream High)

Best Female Newcomer: Im Soo Hyang (New Tales of Giseng, Paradise Ranch)

Cable TV: Jeon Hye Bin (Yacha, OCN)

Popularity Award: Kim Soo Hyun (Dream High)

Hallyu Star Award: Lee Min Ho (City Hunter)

OST Award: Huh Gak (Best Love “Don’t Forget Me”)

*Totally deserved. This was a great song.

Dramapop will itself be making a list similar “Best” list at the end of the year. Although it will only include specifically dramas that premiered in 2011 or dramas that aired the majority of it’s episodes in 2011. Stay tuned for that!

I agree with you. LMH is a great actor but I don’t think is performance and acting skills can beat Cha Seung-won (Best Love), Park Shin-yang (Sign), Hyun Bin (Secret Garden) and Ji Sung (Royal Family). As of Secret Garden, I personally enjoy it a lot so I think it deserved the Daeseng (as they do have a completed package, acting, filming, directing, rating etc…) but i am kind of iffy on the best director, Hong Sisters did a great job on writing both MGFIS and Best Love. Well. What can I say?

Honestly I’d agree with both of you that Lee Min Ho isn’t the ‘best’ actor in terms of acting skills, but I’m glad he got the award! (haha sorry I’m a big fan). This could also be an encouragement of sorts for him to work even more on his acting in hopes of getting the award again next year. Plus ‘City Hunter’ itself was a good drama (ie. better than Personal preference, imo) 😀

I’m working on compiling a kdrama site of sorts: http://www.allthingskdrama.com. It’s still in the works, but any early comments/suggestions are welcome! thanks!
